Sarodiya Shree Shubhabrata Chatterjee’s rich lineage of music can be traced back six generations.
His phenomenal musical journey began at the age of 8 under the profound guidence of Dr. Dilip Patra and Kamal Mallick. For 12 years Subhabrata learnt the intricate science and art of playing the Sarod from them. He then joined internationally acclaimed Sitar Maestro Pt. Deepak Choudhury, one of the senior most disciples of Pt. Ravi Shankar.
The lessons of disciplined development of the Ragas transformed Subhabrata into an artist of great maturity and aesthetics. His playing technique was further enhanced under the tutelage of Sarod Virtuoso Vidushi Ameena Perera, the Daughter of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
Subhabrata entices the new generation audiences into the Senia Maihar Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music at different prestigious venues and festivals in India and abroad. Shubhabrata has performed at many international festivals, including the Kala Utsavam Festival in Singapore and at prestigious venues such as Indian Embassies for Germany, Italy, France, Holand and Switzerland. He has also performed in Moscow, UFFA at Russia. As a contemporary Sarodiya Shubhabrata has presented Sarod to audiences in different corner of the world.
In India Subhabrata has charmed his Audience in several prestigious venues & festivals like India Habitat Centre, Delhi, West Bengal State Music Academy, Tribal Museum Bhopal, Salt Lake Music Festival, Whitefield Music Festival, Bangalore, Madras Kali Bari Music Festival, Chennai Dharbar Music Festival, Kalakshetra National Program, Guwahati, Barackpur Music Conference, Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra to name a few.
His playing style truly brings out the voice of the Sarod, in terms of originality in content, technique, virtuosity and expression that transcends the boundaries of language and region.
He has received many awards in India such “Brahm Dhyanam Puroskar” in 2012, received National scholarship by the Dept. of Culture, Ministry of HRD, (Govt. of India), to name a few.
Subhabrata is the founder member of the Uttarpara Basant Bahar & Musical Academy, featuring budding musicians from all over India – first of its kind orchestra for Indian Classical Music. His maiden albums (name your Album) & (name your Album) are appreciated widely as one Artist one instrument have created a philharmonic effect.
He holds the Master Degree in Music from Rabindrabharati University, Kolkata and had an extensive research paper on Maihar Gharana and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. His series of talks and lecture-demonstrations in various Universities and schools made him an adored emissary of the Senia Maihar Gharana among the younger generation. He is a regular artist of AlR and ICCR and also taught music in Uday Shankar Institute of India Culture from 2003 to 2008 in Kolkata and in Anubhab Academy, Germany since 2015.
An artiste, a collaborator, a composer and a teacher the versatility of Subharata’s life achievements over 25 years, truly embody the rich musical heritage of India, making him one of the Sarod masters.
